Leather Puppetry of ‘TholuBommalata (literally leather puppetry)’ is an oral history tradition of Nimmalakunta in Anantapuramu district, Narasaraopet & Ekkalavaripalyam in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. Vividly painted leather puppets are used in dramatic puppet shows to narrate stories from Indian mythology in this tradition. As technology evolved and urbanisation took over, however, like many of these traditions “leather puppetry” too faced extinction. Artisans diversified their livelihoods by applying the art of leather puppetry to make home décor items like lamp shades and screens. Of late, this art is also being used to create beautiful accessories and jewellery too.
